Heather Gan
Dr Heather Gan is a Clinical Psychologist with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology who prepares Child Impact Reports and Single Expert Reports for matters before the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. She conducts her assessments in English and is fluent in Mandarin.
Dr Gan has experience assessing children and families in the context of parenting disputes, including matters involving high conflict, allegations of family violence, parental mental health concerns, and complex interpersonal dynamics. Her work is informed by developmental psychology, attachment theory, and evidence-based assessment frameworks.
Her clinical work includes experience with families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including families from Southeast and East Asian communities. This supports a culturally informed understanding of parenting practices, family roles, and relational expectations, while maintaining a neutral and child-focused assessment framework.
Dr Gan’s doctoral research examined moral motivation in young children, with a particular focus on parental socialisation and the development of children’s moral emotions across cultural contexts. This academic background contributes to her capacity to understand how parental behaviour, emotional regulation, and relational patterns influence children’s psychological wellbeing.
Dr Gan adopts a structured, impartial, and child-focused approach to assessment, with careful attention to procedural fairness and the Court’s terms of reference. Her reports aim to assist the Court through clear, balanced, and clinically grounded opinions.
