Dr. Michael Emmett Maher
Having initially trained as a clinical psychologist in the UK over 20 years ago, Dr Maher later undertook specialist child psychotherapy training at the Tavistock Centre in London before moving to Sydney. He also prepared family law reports in the UK.
Dr Maher worked in child, adolescent and family mental health services (CAMHS) between 1999 and 2012 in the UK. In 2013, Dr Maher commenced a role in CAMHS in the eastern suburbs area of Sydney and has worked extensively with children and adolescents who have experienced parental separation and family breakdown.
Since joining the Relationspace in 2020, he has pursued an interest in the family law interface with psychology and works as an expert witness for the Federal Circuit & Family Court of Australia. Dr Maher has also worked as an accredited clinician for the Children’s Court of NSW.
In working inclusively, Dr Maher has an interest in supporting children and parents from diverse families. Additionally, he offers individual psychological treatment to separated parents involved in complex FC&FCoA proceedings. Dr Maher has also presented at various family law and domestic violence conferences and has spent some time supporting early career lawyers to reflect on psychological dynamics in their roles with complex family law matters.
